Herbs of the Southern Appalachians
August 6 to 12, 2017
The Southern Appalachian forest is sometimes referred to as the "apothecary of North America," because of the vast number of medicinal herbs that thrive here. This week long class will give you a solid introduction to the uses of many of these plants as we spend time both in the field and classroom.
You'll learn the botany basics during field studies where you'll learn to identify herbs (both native and introduced), recognize plant families, and use botanical keys in a variety of settings.
We'll also collect, press, and mount plant specimens to create an herbarium as a record of our explorations. Be prepared for mornings outside, studying plants and gathering specimens, followed by afternoons in the cool of our air-conditioned classroom where you'll be introduced to the historic and current uses of the plants we've seen.

Healing with the Five Elements: Exploring the Power of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Friday, September 8, 2017, 9:30 to 4:30
At the center of all healing traditions is this understanding: the essential energy and rhythm of the Earth elements manifest in and profoundly affect our health and well-being. Our task is to sharpen our ability to recognize these patterns that affect every living thing.
Whether a healer by profession or for self and family, this day-long workshop will provide insight into the practical and poetic ways that elemental energies create symptoms of health and disease in the body, mind and spirit.
Explore and understand this simple framework and you will begin to not only recognize patterns in radically new ways but also how to support changes that bring balance.
